Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions to your doctor. Your doctor should recommend catheters, and your healthcare provider should give you proper instructions. Speak up if you are unsure of the process.
To prevent infections, make sure to keep the catheter and catheter site clean (UTIs are expected for those using a catheter). Clean yourself at least twice a day.
- To minimize pain, irritation, and friction, use lubrication when inserting the catheter, which may also help reduce infection.
- Before and after emptying the urine bag, always wash your hands thoroughly.
- Be careful as you walk, pull on the tubing, twist it, or move on the tubing. It might be beneficial for you to clip the tubing to your clothes to prevent this.
- To avoid urine from flowing back into your bladder and causing an infection, always hold the urine bag below your bladder (below the waist).
It does not have to be overwhelming to learn how to use a catheter.
